Arakadz is a mountainous area located on the west of Lake Sevan. Fish-like monuments, fortresses, and churches known as “Vishab” (Dragon) are sited on the slopes of Mount Arakadz.
According to tradition, the name comes from the words Ara (Armenian King) and Kah (Throne).
Arakadz is the 4th highest mountain in Armenia. It has 4 sharp peaks. That’s why it’s called tetrapeak. Its crest is forever covered in snow.
Arakadz is a fertile region, it has thousands of springs from which originate many streams. More than ten lakes are located on its sides. It is rich with vegetation and tinted by colorful and fragrant flowers.
At twilight, as the final rays of the sun start to disappear on Arakadz, between its 4 peaks a luminous glare called the “Illuminator’s Lantern” hangs from the heavens. According to legend, when Saint Gregory the Illuminator was praying one day on Mount Arakadz, a marvelous ever-burning lantern came down upon him. It is still believed that the Illuminator’s lantern is still there, and that only the pure in heart and spirit can see this symbol of hopes and dreams.
