The wife of well known Armenian writer Levon Shant, Chavo Shant was equipped with higher education and had broad literary and academic connections. She was a respected figure especially among the entourage of her husband’s intellectual family.
Her social work started in 1910 in Istanbul where she and Sattenig Ohanchanian devoted themselves to the institution of the Workhouse.
Chavo Shant organized a group of Tashnag Women who exceptionally became devoted to the women’s organization work. The Istanbul Workhouse was founded with the initiative of this group.
Between 1911 and 1913, after several years of altruistic work, Chavo and her friends initiated a new interest in the Istanbul region and motivated the females toward social work.
After the independence of the Republic of Armenia, she settled in Yerevan. And after the sovietization of Armenia in 1921, she moved to Europe and then to Cairo, then Aleppo, and finally she settled in Beirut.
In 1924, Chavo and some friends established the Armenian Red Cross of France which later became the Blue Cross. During a few years, this women’s organization spread from the center Paris.
For 10 years, Chavo Shant dedicated her life for relief work as she remained a member of the Central Executive.
After 1936, she dedicated herself to the relief work in Lebanon and Syria.
During World War II in 1942, along with Lola Sassouni, Chavo Shant established the program called “a plate of food”.
In 1938, she establishes the first ARCL clinic in the Karantina region.
In 1945, she passed away after a prolonged illness.
The Chavo Shant Chapter was established in 1984 in the Dekweneh region.
The founding members included: Salpi Paklayian, Marie Tahmizian, Nvart Berberian, and Arpi.
The chapter operates under the umbrella ARF “Shoushy” committee in the Rawda region. It meets in the apartment bequeathed to the chapter by Veronica Mardirossian.
