Heghoush Papazian

Heghine was born in Yerevan in 1892. She was raised in a patriotic environment as her parental home was known to be a refuge of many Tashnag activists.

During 1905 and 1906 Heghoush became a member of the ARF student union, the Red Cross secret society, and the Boys & Girls Youth Organization:

Heghoush studied medicine in Russia. She married Vahan Papazian (Goms) in Tbilisi in 1916.

During the volunteer movements, Heghoush took care of the volunteers and became a motivator for the female committees.

In 1918, as the Turkish forces approached Sarikamish, the Armenians started retreating toward northern Caucasus. Heghoush followed the refugees to be available for medical assistance. In the summer of 1919, she returned to Armenia.

During the Sovietization of Armenia, Heghoush’s husband was delegated to Paris; however, she remained in Armenia. In 1922, she settled with her husband in Paris where she participated in the activities of the Blue Cross.

In 1930, with the initiative of Heghoush’s husband, the first chapter of the Armenian Red Cross of Lebanon was established in Beirut. Later, the foundation was laid for the Karantina clinic.

Heghoush spent her final years in Beirut where she initiated the activities of folk costume embroidery.

She died in April of 1983.
