Roupina

Roupina Ohanchanian (born Areshian) was born in Tbilisi in 1881, to a wealthy landowner’s home. After receiving her primary education, she moved to Baku where the revolutionary and patriotic atmosphere of the 1890s left a deep impression upon her.

In 1905 she moved to Bulgaria where she participated in the preparations for the assassination of Sultan Abdul Hamid. Roupina moved to Constantinople and devoted herself for the revolutionary life with great enthusiasm.

Her life remained turbulent. After she heard the news of Hamo Ohanchanian’s arrest, she decided to move back to the Caucasus.

On the 20th of March, 1912, sentenced to four years of hard labor, Hamo Ohanchanian got exiled to Siberia in emaciated and sick condition. Roupina also went to Siberia to take care of Hamo. There, they were married.

In 1915, because of the Russo-Turkish wars, Armenian political exiles got pardoned. Hamo and Roupina returned to Tbilisi. Then, they moved to Van to deliver medical assistance to the Armenians of Vaspouragan.

Along with the intellectuals, Roupina and her husband emigrated and settled in Cairo where Roupina continued her public and political activism. She participated in many of the ARF conventions.

She became one of the founding members of the Hamazkayin Educational & Cultural Society.

In the 1960s, she moved to Canada where she died in 1971.

Վարչութիւնը կը գործէ ՀՅԴ «Ռուբէն Կոմիտէի» հովանաւորութեան տակ , եւ իր ակումբին մէջ:

Մասնաճիւղը ունեցած է նաեւ ընկերային ծառայութեան կեդրոն մը , ուր նուիրեալ ընկերուհիներ կ՛աշխատէին անձերու դժուարութիւնները լուծելու :
