Sevan

The largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region, Lake Sevan is one of the largest freshwater high-altitude lakes in the world. It is fed by 28 rivers and streams.

Because of interventions, the lake has changed greatly over time.

Regular hydrological studies are conducted since 1926. A hydro-electric plant is located on the Hraztan River which originates from Lake Sevan.

When watched from the shore, Sevan is very picturesque. Its water is clear and greenish-blue. Around it arise the Areknit, Vartenis and Keghama mountain ranges.

Many resorts, beaches, and picnic areas are located along the lake shore. The shores also host 4 operating fisheries which annually introduce millions of little fish to the lake.

The Sevan Peninsula, once the Sevan Island, is home of Sevanavank or the “Vazkenian Monastery” which operates until today.

The Sevan Chapter was established in 1941 in the Jounieh region.

The founding board included: Aroushiag Soukiassian (considered founder of the chapter), Sattenig Balian, Asdghig Saatjian, Alis Ateshian, Antoinette Hasdajian, Loucin Kazanjian, and Vartouhi Mahliguian.

The chapter operates under the umbrella of the ARF “Hrair Maroukhian” committee.

Its meetings and events are held at the Homenetmen club in Jounieh.
