Shoushy

Only 11 km far from the capital Sdepanagerd, Shoushy is located on the heights of the mountainous Nagorno Karapagh. Because of its position, Shoushy oversees upon the surrounding deep gorges.

Once under the Azerbaijani rule, Shoushy is currently populated by thousands of Armenian villagers. The town is famous for its educational and music institutes, libraries, cultural centers and the leather factory.

Shoushy is a center of carpet weaving. Karapagh’s wrought silk factory is also found in Shoushy.

In 1988, the Artsakh Liberation Wars began leaving thousands of martyrs whose deaths didn’t go in vain as Artsakh got its liberation from the Azerbaijani rule and the Nagorno-Karapagh Republic was established.

But Shoushy remained captive until May 8th, 1992. Its high position didn’t stop the Armenian gorillas (Fedayis) attempts to reach and liberate this paradise which became a heroic city.

With the liberation of Shoushy, the Armenian cause recorded a new achievement saturating the Armenian hearts with hope and a vision of a bright future.

The Shoushy Chapter was established in 1937.

The founding board included: Loucin Haytayian (chair), Never Papoulian (secretary), Sattenig Michaelian (treasurer), Azadouhi Arshagouni, and Azadouhi Toursarkissian.

In 1975, the “Zahleh” chapter and the “Chtaura” chapters were unified and called the “Zahle- Chtaura” Chapter which was later called “Shoushy”.

The chapter operates at the Armenian center in Zahle under the umbrella of the ARF “Aram” Committee.
