Zevartnotz, in the fields of Ararat at a distance of 2 kilometers from Etchmiadzin, is a ruined Armenian Cathedral built in the 7th Century by the orders of Catholicos Nerses III and was consecrated in 652.
The word “Zevart” means happy and bright. “Zevartoun” means Angel. Therefore, “Zevartnotz” means a place for Angels. It is said that St. Gregory the Illuminator has had his glorious vision at this place. In the vision, he had seen Jesus Christ descending from heaven accompanied by the songs of the Angels, and had shown him where to build a cathedral which was called “Etchmiadzin” (Descent of the Only-Begotten). The Zevartnotz Cathedral was dedicated to St. Gregory.
Zevartnotz is a universal architectural marvel and a masterpiece of Armenian architecture. It is famous for its unique design with its 3 levels, 5 entrances and 3 domes.
The Zevartnotz Chapter was established in 1971 in the Hazmieh region.
