The third lecture of a series of lectures organized by ARCL regional board health committee took place on December 19, 2018 at 10 a.m. The subject was “Necessary Yearly Blood Tests”
After listening to the march of ARS and the opening word in the name of the health committee, laboratory expert Dr. Eddie Racoubian was invited to deliver his lecture.
Dr. Eddie Racoubian mentioned that lifestyle plays a crucial role in health issues. We as human beings need sunlight, natural nutrition, movement, walking, so that we stay healthy. Our inactive life, air pollution, and cigarettes are critical factors for the spread of diseases. After examining the mummified bodies in the pyramids they found out that none of them had diabetes or cancer. He noted that recently diabetes is progressing due to the extra consumption of sugar, white bread, and pastries. The establishment of this disease in the body due to obesity leads to many complications, such as blood vessel hardening and kidney failure. Then the doctor said that in the United States they pay more attention to diabetes than cholesterol. The only food group/category containing healthy sugar is fruit. We can survive without eating bread. If a patient suffers with cholesterol it will take a long time for complications to exhibit themselves however diabetes takes a shorter time to be revealed. In the United States diabetes is called the “silent killer”. Cholesterol is caused by our nutrition, and sometimes our body produces it. He recommended not to eat meals but fruit after 6:00 p.m. He also said that walking is important because when we make movements and extra effort, the blood circulates better, and the heart beats faster, and if the tissues of the body keep on operating the body will stay healthy. We should walk for half an hour per day. Normal blood sugar levels should be maintained for diabetics. Then Dr. Racoubian talked about cancer and said that the most common form is lung cancer which is mainly caused by smoking. Then he mentioned that according to a study none smokers never had cancer before but smokers are always prone to cancer.
Afterwards Dr. Eddie Racoubian talked about Laboratory tests. He said that when a baby is born his/her tonsils are checked through tests. Until the age of 40 individuals usually don’t need to get tests. After the age of 40 signs of wrong lifestyle are revealed. After the age of 40 women should get mammography, general blood, sugar and cholesterol tests should be performed regularly, and after fifty years old, tests should be done on yearly basis. As for men the prostate should be examined after the age of fifty. The sugar content in the blood is calculated in percentage which is attached to the red blood cells which should be less than 6%. In the last part of the lecture the lecturer talked about calcification and how it is related to body movements. He said too much or too little movement causes calcification. Then the attendants asked various questions to the lecturer. Last but not least, in the name of health committee a souvenir was given to the lecturer of the day Dr. Eddie Racoubian.
